Referrals: The Golden Goose Of A Sales Career

On the internet, play to win

Anyone who has ever sold anything in their life knows how much of a pain in the butt it is to do your own originating. For the uninitiated, you might know this as cold calling.

What could be MORE uncomfortable than bothering someone at their work or home and asking them to listen to your presentation?

The trick is to ignore the inevitable rejections and keep your cool, but that can take months of constant effort to master, ESPECIALLY if you’re more of a sensitive, introverted type.

But think about this: wouldn’t it be great if, instead of calling old leads, you could just get previous customers to recommend you and your service to some of their friends?

This principle is at the HEART of referral marketing. On the internet, this strategy for building your business can exponentially increase the amount of traffic to your site.

Wise words spoken by a wise man

An intelligent man once said, “I’d rather have 1% of 100 people’s effort than 100% of my own.”

But as internet marketers, how do we put this into practice?

How can we get someone so jazzed about our product or service that they VOLUNTARILY choose to promote it as well?

The answer, as usual, touches the nerve system of successful selling: show them how your product or service will help them achieve their goals. Once you show them DIRECTLY how they’ll benefit, they’ll be happy to help you.

Fortunately for us, sites like Clickbank make it ridiculously easy to market the services of another person.

A referral a day keeps the real job away

Its worth saying that when you create a product, design it with the purpose in mind of using it to promote your current business. Even if you have to give it away for free, it will be worth it if it helps you promote your site.

This can be hard for newbies to wrap their mind around. Giving away a product of value for free goes against our common sense. If we give it away, how will we profit directly from it?

Well, you won’t. But the positive press you generate when you give away quality, buzz-worthy educational products is worth far more than the profit generated from a single (or many!) sales.

  • I completely agree with your comments. Also, if you want search engine traffic, then the quickest way to get this is to have keywords in your domain. But if you want a catchy name then go for it.

Twitter campaigns also draw traffic to your site really well, and if you use RSS2TWITTER you can view your traffic statistics for free.

  • I’m fascinated by the diverse range of views and opinions. Who’s your “go to” guy?

Thanks for the comment. In response to your question, I don’t have a “go to” guy, per se. However, I do have a strong background in sales. If you’re looking for some people to Google for advice/motivation, try some from this list: Tony Robbins, Zig Ziglar, Tom Hopkins, Carlos Xuma, any PUA (Mystery, Style, Tyler Durden), http://www.rsdnation.com, http://www.ted.com, Seth Godin… that should get you going for a while!
